Deutsche Telekom Posts 1st-Qtr Loss of EU400 Million
(Update1)
By Matthew Miller

Bonn, April 24 (Bloomberg) -- Deutsche Telekom AG, Europe's largest phone company by sales,
said it had a first-quarter loss after a profit in the same quarter last year on acquisition costs and as it
paid interest tied to new mobile-phone licenses.

The German company had a first-quarter loss of about 400 million euros ($359 million), it said in a
statement on the Frankfurt stock exchange newswire. That's compared with net income of 509
million euros in the same quarter last year.

Deutsche Telekom said it expects 2001 operating profit to rise more than 10 percent as it spends
less on winning new customers and margins at its mobile phone unit improve. First- quarter earnings
before interest, taxes depreciation and amortization at its wireless unit rose 68 percent, it said.

``The first quarter confirms our expectations of an improvement in operating results in the
double-digit area for the 2001 financial year,'' the company said in its statement.

Analysts were expecting a net loss, on average, of 492 million euros, according to a Bloomberg
News survey. Sales in the first quarter rose 16 percent to 11.1 billion euros, it said.

Deutsche Telekom said net income excluding goodwill and costs associated to a new mobile-phone
license rose 18 percent to 450 million euros from 377 million in the same quarter last year.

The company also said net debt increased 600,000 euros to 57.1 billion euros from 56.5 billion at
the end of 2000.

Chief Financial Officer Karl-Gerhard Eick said yesterday he plans to reduce debt 11 billion euros to
14 billion euros by the close of the purchase of U.S. mobile phone company VoiceStream Wireless
Corp., expected after the May 29 shareholder meeting.

Deutsche Telekom plans to pay an unchanged dividend of 62 euro cents for 2000, it said before a
press briefing.

It didn't give earnings-per-share figures for the first quarter.
